POPULATION: 6, 4 million
LANGUAGES: Predominantly Xhosa, and, English and Afrikaans
SIZE: Second largest of South Africa’s nine provinces
LANDSCAPE: Richly diverse with rugged mountains, lush forests, semi-arid Karoo vast lands, golden beaches, skiing slopes in winter and true African bushveld.
CLIMATE: Moderate
MUNICIPALITIES: Amathole, Cacadu, Chris Hani, Ukhahlamba, OR Tambo and Alfred Nzo. Independent of these is the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality which administers Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and Despatch.
MAJOR CENTRES: Nelson Mandela Bay (the province’s largest city) and Buffalo City (South Africa’s only river port). Buffalo City falls into Amathole district.
TOURIST ROUTES: Tsitsikamma Adventures, Kouga, Karoo Heartland, Frontier Country, Sundays River Valley, Sunshine Coast, Amathole Mountain Escape, Friendly N6 and Wild Coast.
ECONOMY: Mainly manufacturing, followed by agriculture and government services. Five growth areas identified by the province as the core of its economic game plan include: manufacturing, agriculture and agro-processing, tourism, investment in infrastructure and investment in people.
MAJOR NATIONAL GOVERNMENT INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENTS: The Coega and East London Industrial Development Zones (IDZs). The Eastern Cape is the only province in South Africa to boast two IDZs.

Amathole District Municipality http://www.amathole.gov.za The Amathole municipal district lies in the central coastal portion of the Eastern Cape. Its boundaries stretch from the Great Fish River in the south to the Dwesa/Cwebe Nature Reserve in the east and north past Hogsback. It includes Buffalo City - the most populous local municipality in the country.

Buffalo City Municipality http://www.buffalocity.gov.za Buffalo City is an aspirant metropolitan area which stretches from South Africa's only river port, East London, in the east to Dimbaza in the west and includes the provincial capital Bhisho. It is the most populous local municipality in the country.

Cacadu District Municipality http://www.cacadu.co.za Cacadu, in the west, is the largest municipal district in the province. It cover around 60 000 sq.km and is home to 400 000 people. Cacadu is a tourist's paradise - it stretches from coast to Karoo - from Graaff-Reinet in the north to the Indian Ocean in the south and between the Bloukrans River in the west and Great Fish River in the east. The Cacadu District Municipality (CDM) comprises nine local municipalities and six district management areas, amongst these the Greater Addo National Elephant Park and the Tsitsikamma National Park.

East London Industrial Development Zone http://www.elidz.co.za The ELIDZ operates on some 1500ha of prime land on the west bank of the Buffalo River, with easy access to national transport networks such as the Port of East London, the N2 national road and the East London Airport. The ELIDZ targets small to medium industrialists, local and foreign, who are export-orientated. Its priority sectors are automotive, agriculture, agro-processing and information and communications technology (ICT). The initiative is backed by the Department of Trade and Industry.
